Freeware Files: 5 Apps for Locking Down Your System, Hardcore

By David Murphy

“Privacy” is the word that’s on the lips of anyone even remotely connected to the Web 2.0 nowadays. But I don’t care much about that. What you do on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, or whatever, is your own business–and, worse, there aren’t really third-party applications that you can download and use to self-assess your potential privacy pitfalls. You’re on your own there.

However, when it comes to Windows–oh, yes, there’s much we can talk about when it comes to the Windows operating system. There are always newer and stronger ways to protect your PC from intrusion, from third-party access via an unscrupulous exploit or unintended network connection to the raw, physical tricks one can use to gain access to your protected information. Makes my skin crawl just thinking about it, it does.

So, without further ado, let’s take a little joyride through some unique free and open-source applications that you can use to lock down your PC without removing all traces of usability from your operating system. For just about the only thing worse than a computer nobody else can get into is a computer that you, yourself, have to jump through 30 hoops just to get into. These apps aren’t going to be that, you have my word.

Wondershare Time Freeze Free

Virtualization software is nothing new; I’ve covered a ton of these various apps before. For those new, however, here’s the quick summary–if you want to install programs or fiddle around without messing up the actual contents of your system, you do your modifications in a virtual environment. Said software doesn’t actually affect the normal working condition of your system and you can wipe/delete/turn-on/turn-off the virtualized OS at your leisure.

Wondershare Time Freeze–free for a limited time only–works directly with your operating system to shield the “real” contents of your system with a “protection mode” that you can toggle on and off. Install apps in the protected mode and, if you don’t like the changes, you can delete all the modifications by rebooting your system. However–and this is the cool part–you can let said changes pass through the protected mode and actually affect your system with the touch of a button as well. It’s one thing to block your system from modifications; it’s another story entirely to allow them!

One caveat:The free version of  Wondershare Time Freeze only works with 32-bit versions of the Windows OS.

Luxand Blink!

Do you have a webcam?  No?  Stop reading. If you do, however, then you’re in for a real treat with Luxand Blink!  I can’t tell you how it works, but this awesome (and free) application transforms your simple webcam into a security gateway. Instead of logging into your system using a boring ol’ typed-in password, Luxand Blink! takes a shot of your mug and uses a wicked facial recognition system to log you in. Just stare blankly into your webcam–it’s the fastest login you’ll ever have.

Beyond that, Luxand Blink! can also log a picture anytime someone logs into your PC period. It’s a useful (and fun) trick to see if anyone has accessed–or tried to access–your system without your knowledge.

USB Guardian

Here’s the deal–if you’re ingenious or just plain good at reading instructions on the internet, it’s super-easy to build a USB-based device that can autorun some kind of disastrous file or batch command on a person’s PC. But I’m not about to show you how to do that. Rather, USB Guardian is a great freeware tool that helps you prevent this kind of activity on your own system.

The programs works like this: Whenever a USB device connects up to your system, the program runs in the background to scan and disable any autorun.inf files on the drive. If said autorun file references any additional executables, USB Guardian disables those as well. You can access the drive as normal and, should you determine that the autorun is safe, unlock the various files via USB Guardian’s simple interface.

Antivirus-Multi

Sometimes, one virus scanner isn’t enough. If you have a particular directory that you want to keep as scanned and secured as possible (like, say, your default downloads directory), then it’s worth your while to check out Antivirus-Multi. This simple application uses the command-line interface of antivirus scanners to run multiple scans of a given directory with a large swath of programs at once.  The configuration isn’t the easiest in the world, and you need the .NET Framework 3.5 installed prior to using the app, but that’s a small price to pay for extreme system security, right?

UserAssistView

This one’s easy. Windows runs an internal list of all the programs or applications that have been launched on the system by the active user. If you’d like to gain access to that list for whatever discernable reason (who the heck ran virushardcoreohno.exe?), all you need to do is fire up the easy-to-use application UserAssistView. You’ll get a detailed list of everything that’s been launched on the system, though that might not help you much in tracking down whoever the actual person was that did things to/on your machine…

With the development of information technology, mobile PDF readers and mobile devices will combine and perform better in the near future.

Put Your PDF to Office Word then Edit it!

Put PDF to Word then edit it in Office Word? Is it possible? You may think that I am kidding but if you have suffered from type the PDF contents manually and wasted much time for editing PDF files, you may really want to know how you can put your PDF to Office Word then Edit it easily.

The most common way to do this is copying the content from PDF to Word. You can copy the text from PDF files then paste it to the Word file for editing. This method is suitable for the light workload or personal use. For example, you just need one paragraph or one page. If the PDF file is more than 100 pages, copy the text may become hassle.

Then the second way is, in the PDF reader, click File, Save as TXT. Then copy the PDF text into Office Word. For the big PDF file, this method may save your time compared with the first way.

PDF files, sometimes, are protected from copying, editing and commenting. For this kind of PDF files, you can neither copy the text nor save it as txt. If you need to put this kind of PDF to Word for Editing, you need to remove the restriction or convert the PDF files to Word. But how to convert pdf to Word Doc?

This PDF to Word Conversion tool is exactly you need. When converting PDF files to Word, you can convert the entire PDF document or only a specific page range (all, from…to…, individual pages) to Word files. The restricted PDF files (cannot be edited, copied but can be opened), can be easily converted to Office Word files, no password needed.

Put PDF to Word for editing, there are some free PDF to Word converters. But both of them cannot convert the security PDF files.

After reading this, you may find the right way. So when editing PDF files next time, just put PDF files to Word and then edit it easily!

Bloggers who write review for their products can get 1-5 free license(s) of Adreamsoft PDF to Word Converter.  Based on the 1.0 version, the new 2.0 version has been overall optimized by improving a few of shortcomings. From my trial experience, the conversion speed of 2.0 has been dramatically increased 5 times than the previous version and occupies the leading position towards other products. The 2.0 version creatively supports multiple languages like French, Spanish, German, Italy, Dutch, Portuguese, and Chinese and so on to provide better service for non-English users.

The easiest way to test out a converter is to get it to convert a document and compare the result with the original. Doing this with my test document, which included a mixture of text, graphics and images, Adreamsoft PDF to Word Converter 2.0 version generally retained original page layout precisely.

In addition to the feature of the 1.0 version, Adreamsoft claims PDF to Word Converter 2.0 has a number of innovative features as presented briefly below, though I haven’t tested them exhaustively yet.

  1.  Flexible output options
     Retain original page layout, especially text and images typesetting;
     Support converting an entire document or only a specific page range;
    Batch conversion of multiple PDF documents to word files at the same time with one click;
  2. Convert PDF to Word Easily

    Convert PDF files into Microsoft Word 2003-2007 formats (.doc, .docx) and RTF formats;

  3. Additional advantages
    Additional Support generating variety image of straight line, curve, polygon and so on;
    Smaller system resources occupancy rate.

12 Tips for Delivering a Knockout Business Presentation

By Wendy Russell, About.com
The first step is completed. Your wonderful presentation is created and ready for prime time. Now is your chance to shine when you deliver it to an audience. Here are tips to make this presentation a successful venture.

1. Know your material:

Knowing your material thoroughly, will help you decide what information is essential to your presentation and what can be left out. It will help your presentation to flow naturally, allowing you to adjust to unexpected questions or events, and it will help you feel more comfortable when speaking in front of an audience.

2. Don’t Memorize:

This is, after all, a presentation, not a recital. Every presentation needs two major components — life and energy. Recite from memory and your presentation will be sadly lacking both of these factors. Not only will you lose your audience, but you will be hard pressed to adapt to unexpected events that may throw you off your mental script.

3. Rehearse Your Presentation:

Rehearse your presentation out loud, accompanied by the slide show. If possible, get someone to listen while you rehearse. Have the person sit at the back of the room so you can practice speaking loudly and clearly. Ask your listener for honest feedback about your presentation skills. Make changes where necessary and run through the whole show again. Keep repeating until you feel comfortable with the process.

4. Pace Yourself:

As part of your practice, learn to pace your presentation. Generally, you should spend about one minute per slide. If there are time constraints, make sure that the presentation will finish on time. During your delivery, be ready to adjust your pace in case you need to clarify information for your audience or answer questions.

5. Know the Room:

Be familiar with the place in which you will speak. Arrive ahead of time, walk around the speaking area, and sit in the seats. Seeing the setup from your audience’s perspective will help you decide where to stand, what direction to face, and how loudly you will need to speak.

6. Know the Equipment:

If you are using a microphone, make sure it works. The same goes for the projector. If it’s your projector, carry a spare bulb. Also, check to see if the projector is bright enough to overpower the room’s lighting. If not, find out how to dim the lights.

7. Copy Your Presentation to the Computer’s Hard Drive:

Whenever possible, run your presentation from the hard disk rather than a CD. Running the show from a CD may slow your presentation.

8. Use a Remote Control:

Don’t hide at the back of the room with the projector. Get up front where your audience can see and hear you. Also, just because you have a remote, don’t wander around the room — it will only distract your audience. Remember you are the focal point of the presentation.

9. Avoid Using a Laser Pointer :

Often the projected light dot on a laser pointer is too small to be seen effectively. If you are at all nervous, the dot may be hard to hold still in your shaking hands. Besides, a slide should hold only key phrases. You are there to fill in the details for your audience. If there is vital information in the form of a chart or graph that you feel your audience must have, put it in a handout and refer to it rather than having to point out specific details of a slide to your audience.

10. Do Not Speak to Your Slides:

Many presenters watch their presentation rather than their audience. You made the slides, so you already know what is on them. Turn to your audience and make eye contact with them. It will make it easier for them to hear what you are saying, and they will find your presentation much more interesting.

11. Learn To Navigate Your Presentation:

Audiences often ask to see the previous screen again. Practice moving forward and backward through your slides. With PowerPoint you can also move through your presentation non-sequentially. Learn how to jump ahead or back to a certain slide, without having to go through the entire presentation.

12. Have a Backup Plan:

What if your projector dies? Or the computer crashes? Or the CD drive doesn’t work? Or your CD gets stepped on? For the first two, you may have no choice but to go with an AV free presentation, so have a printed copy of your notes with you. For the last two, carry a backup of your presentation on a USB flash drive or email yourself a copy, or better yet, do both.

How to Best Prepare PowerPoint Slides for Video & DVD Production

 by Bob from bobsloan.com

Many times we have incorporated our client’s PowerPoint slides into their video and DVD productions.  Because computer displays and television displays are different, keeping a few things in mind will be of help to both of us.

PowerPoint presentations are optimized for computers. DVDs are optimized for television. There are a number of differences between high-resolution output for computers and low-resolution output for television. Basically, computer resolution is far greater than television’s resolution of 720 x 486 pixels (NTSC). Also, normal televisions at a minimum crop as much as 10% from around the edge (5% from each edge), resulting in a number of consequences when incorporating PowerPoint images into your video production and then to DVD.   Keeping the following guidelines in mind when designing your PowerPoint presentation will help insure a good DVD experience as well.

These are as follows

 Try to use 30 pt fonts or higher as small text may get lost on video.

 Use sans serif (e.g. Arial, Helvetica) bold fonts.

 Use no more than 4 or 5 lines of text per slide.

 Avoid the color red, use darker colors and greens and blues.

 Keep your graphics simple.

 Provide at least a 15% border around the edge.

We realize that these recommendations may seem limiting to you for your live presentation but it helps to be aware of this.  In addition, audiences basically prefer simpler graphics.  Too much information can cause them to disassociate altogether with the slide.
